Safety @ Back 2 Basics

We expect your visit to Back 2 Basics and the surrounding area will be pleasant and relaxing, but we want to inform you of safety precautions that are in your best interest to know ahead of time. Certain information listed at the bottom of this page is part of the "Rental Policy," which also includes additional information about policies and procedures at Back 2 Basics.

Safety notices:

Roads

The roads surrounding Back 2 Basics and many in Southern Illinois in general are hilly and curvy, and drivers should take extra caution when driving . Additionally, some of the the roads surrounding Back 2 Basics are gravel-surfaced, and drivers are recommended to drive maximum 25 mph on gravel roads.

Designated Driver

Back 2 Basics recommends that you always choose a designated driver for your group before you set out, especially when touring the Shawnee Wine Trail. As already mentioned, the roads are already a bit more challenging than normal, and inebriation while driving will not help.  Keep the safety of yourself and your group in mind, and choose a "Bob," or designated driver, or contact Back 2 Basics about hiring a driver for your group.

Nature and Wildlife
Back 2 Basics is located in a wild area, where animals and plants have been the dominant force for many years.

Smoking: Smoking is not allowed in the Back 2 Basics Cabins.  If evidence is found of smoking in the Cabins upon Management’s closing walk-through, the guest will be fined $100.  Smoking is only allowed outside the Cabins, as long as cigarette butts are disposed of in the proper receptacles, provided by Back 2 Basics.  Please NEVER flush cigarette butts down the toilet, down the sink drain, or otherwise dispose of them in the Cabins, or leave butts on the ground anywhere on Back 2 Basics premises.

Alcohol: While alcohol is allowed in moderation, being drunk on the premises imposes risks too great for the owner of Back 2 Basics and cannot be tolerated.  The proper authorities will be contacted in the case of disruptive behavior due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Swimming: Swimming is never allowed at Back 2 Basics. Public beaches are available throughout the region (You can find more information on our Activity page)

Play / Hike at Your Own Risk: Hiking, playing on the rocks and in the creek/stream and utilizing the property is at your own risk.  Further, due the risks of getting hurt or running into wild animals, never hike or wander too far from camp alone.

Slippery Rocks: Be careful playing on the big boulders in the stream as they can be very slippery when wet, especially after rain.

Wildlife: Please do not harm living trees (do not cut for firewood), mosses, ferns, fungus, mushrooms or other living organisms or creatures in the forest.  Wild animals are present in the area. Please DO NOT leave food out for these animals. It is for their protection as well as your safety that they do not eat human food. Please enjoy them from a safe distance and never attempt to hand them food or photograph them up close.

Campfires: Bonfires are only allowed in the portable fireplace and grills provided upon request by Back 2 Basics Management.  Instruction will be provided on proper use and safety.  Please keep the fires contained in the portable fireplace units at all times, and exercise good judgment and caution at all times.  If your fire escapes, you will be required to pay for any damages to the Back 2 Basics premises or facilities.

Insects: We are in Southern Illinois and sometimes we have unwanted little guest that might decide to visit you and your family.  Every cabin is treated for pests and insects on a regular basis. As with all residences, bugs and other pests do occasional find their way inside cabins. Back 2 Basics will not be responsible in these instances.

Hunting: Hunting on Back 2 Basics` property is NOT ALLOWED.  There are, however, acres of state hunting land close to our location.  We realize that some of our guests may be visiting the Southern Illinois area for hunting purposes.  While on the Back 2 Basics premises, all firearms must be unloaded and properly secured in their cases and locked in the guest’s vehicle at all times.  All ammunition must be stored in the original package or container in which it was sold and must also be locked in the guest’s vehicle at all times.  Hunting spoils must be stored in proper storage facilities in guest vehicles and are not allowed in Cabins.

Weather - Weather changes fast in Southern Illinois, and severe weather is common during certain times of the year. Emergency procedures will be prominently displayed in the Cabins.  Please plan your trip according to the weather. We recommend chains and/or four wheel drive vehicles during the winter months (November to April).  Back 2 Basics will not assume responsibility for road conditions to and from the cabins during inclement weather. No refund will be given due to weather conditions.

Emergency procedures: Procedures to follow at Back 2 Basics in case of emergencies will be prominently posted in each Cabin where applicable and available in the Cabin Information Binders (one located in each Cabin).
